homebrew wort problems?
I am a newbie beer brewer working on brew #4. I thought that if I added 2 gallons of cold water at the bottom of the carboy it would help the wort cool off faster. It didnt happen…..6 hours later I added the yeast, as the container felt warm to the touch and a sample taken was also lukewarm. a thermometer reading (starting at 80 degrees) read 100 but I added the yeast anyway because the sample and the heat from the carboy itself was both lukewarm….7 hours later there is no yeast activity…..so, what do I do now
Alesmith has it. I’d wait a few more hours before panicking though. I’ve had fermentation not start for a full 24hrs before…but I’ll add a trick I’ve used in the past. If you don’t have a wort chiller, ice it the best thing. Get a 7Lbs bag of ice and add it to your primary before adding your boiled wort. The temperature will be well below 80 degrees and you can pitch your yeast.
Hey, if it was good enough for Alton Brown…its good enough for me.
