How to improve beer kit, add hops and make yeast starter?
I am about to make a kit beer, i am also adding 1kg of DME, i also bought some additional hops, how do you think i should add the hops, boil them in a pan for 15min and then just add to fermenter, also should i make a quick yeast starter?
I have found beer kits put together by the homebrew shop makes good beer. The DME will kick the body and alcohol a little and the hops either more bitterness or more hop aroma. For more hop bitterness boil the hops with the extract. For more hop aroma either boil them for 5 to 10 minutes then add them to the fermenter or just add them straight to the fermenter ala dry hoping. But if making an ale dry hoping is not a normal thing to do, dry hoping is for lagers. Every one I talk to says the same thing about using a yeast starter and that is that it is more work but makes a better beer. Just boil a small amount of DME and cool it fast then pitch the yeast to it. Allow the yeast to get acting and when you brew the batch pitch it in. You can do this maybe 8 to 10 hours early to really get it active.
