Beer Can Be Good For Your Bones

Alcoholic beverages are commonly consumed in places such as the home, sporting events, restaurants and social gatherings. It comes in light or dark beer and sold in a variety of flavors. Many people drink because they enjoy the taste. Obviously, beer can have the benefits of enjoyment. Recently, new research published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture has shown that beer may have other benefits as well. It can be a good source for helping to prevent osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones become weak and brittle because of low bone mass. Activities such as coughing, falling or even bending down lead to fractures in your bones because of this condition. Researchers have found that a component of beer, known as silicon, has been shown to increase bone mineral density, which can help build bone strength. A team of researchers at the University of California, Davis examined commercial beer products and concluded that beer is in fact a rich source of dietary silicon.

Researchers have identified that the presence of silicon in beer is in the form of orthosilicic acid (OSA), which according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), may be an important factor in bone and connective tissue growth and development. They discovered that hops showed significantly higher levels of silicon, up to four times, as compared to malts. Researches also concluded that highly hopped beers should yield a higher concentration of silicon levels.

On average, the commercial beer samples that were studied revealed a silicon content between 6.4 to 56.5 mg/L. Wheat was also found to have less silicon than barley. So the next time you drink a beer, remember that not only does it taste good, but it can help build stronger bones.
