How Is Caring For Our Bodies Indicative Of Self Rejection?
There has been a lot published lately on the need to accept our changing bodies and our wrinkles rather than slap on the anti aging skin care products that we spend a mint on. Sure, a few laugh lines can be the symbol of a life well lived, but delaying those laugh lines with anti aging creams doesn’t seem like a bad thing to do.
There are interesting arguments on the other side of the fence. We are told that if we accept our love handles and we embrace those lines and wrinkles that we will be more satisfied with ourselves. Condemning one’s body and taking care of it are two totally different things. As we reflect on the damage we did to our bodies in our youth, we flock to holistic therapy and we crave organic foods. Yet we also want to apply the most powerful products to keep us young.
Sure, most people look at life after 30 with a sense of foreboding, like all of their opportunities have passed them by. While that may have been true once, the new saying is that ’50 is the new 30′ and we can all embrace our lives fully. Does appearing young change any of this?
In our society wrinkles are not looked upon as a status symbol and wide waists are not a symbol of womanly fertility. Perhaps in other cultures, but certainly not in ours. Thus, is there anything wrong with developing a routine of caring for your body in the absolute best way possible?
When you start taking better care of your body, you aren’t just limited to the inside. The outside of the body needs care and concern as well. So a healthy diet and exercise is great, but so is fixing the sun damage you never really thought would happen to you when you were younger.
With age comes wisdom, this is true. So we put down the booze and butt out the smokes and we start exercising for maybe the first time in our lives. The youthful ignorance that we embraced is now showing up, and we’d like to take care of that.
So maybe we can’t take away every wrinkle or keep off every pound. But we can ultimately care for our bodies the way we didn’t before we started realizing that we, too, were prone to causing damage. I think it is fair to say that when you love and accept something you actually take better care of it than when you don’t. If we take care of our bodies the way that we should have been in our earlier days, maybe we will still love our healthy, functioning bodies in our sixties and seventies.
