What Was the First Promotional Gift You Ever Received?

Do you remember the first bit of SWAG (stuff we all get) you ever received?

Mine was when I was at university. Actually that is probably not so – it is just the first time I remember receiving a promotional item. It was a heavy brass bottle opener that I got when I purchased a case of Warsteiner beer for a party I was going to.

I still have it today and would be quite upset if it ever got lost. That low cost bottle opener, emblazoned with the Warsteinger logo has been with me to many parties, camping trips and other events for over 25 years!

Promotional products are everywhere and I am sure I received quite a few before that day in the liquor shop but that bottle opener was the first memorable product I received. It was very well targeted. Warsteiner obviously new that anyone purchasing their bottles of beer might also like a way of opening them.

You would have to be very lucky to give away a promotional product that stayed with your customer for 25 years reminding them about you each time they see it. But a few months or years is not bad either.

Look for promotional merchandise that is carefully targeted toward your customer’s needs.

This is not always easy if you do not know your target audience well, but you are safe offering products we all use and require regularly.

Promotional pens, mouse mats, coffee mugs and desk tidies are all great ideas for office bound customers.

Clothing like t-shirts, umbrellas and sports bottles may be better for people who are outdoors a lot.

If you know your customer likes and interests very well, you are in an even better position. I like to write and recently received a mug, mouse mat, pen and conference folder with a paper pad from a supplier. These are all gifts I use daily and I see their logo daily.

Keep this in mind when searching for promotional merchandise. Gadgety gifts are fun to give away but not always the best choice.

I can’t remember who gave me that Rubik’s Cube that I passed on to my son – who later lost it. I didn’t like the things in the 70s and I don’t like them now.

The better you can target your customers the better your gifts will be received.

So what was your first – or favourite promotional gift? Do you care to share? Why not give that company that gave it to you a little free publicity?
