History of Oktoberfest
Did you know that the original Oktoberfest occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810? The purpose of the first party was to commemorate the marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. A huge horse race was the main event back then. There was no Oktoberfest the following year because Bavaria was involved in the Napoleonic war. The founding citizens of Munich assumed responsibility for festival management beginning in 1819, and it was agreed that the Oktoberfest would become an annual event. Oktoberfest was later lengthened and the date pushed forward because the end of September in Bavaria often has very good weather.
