Getting Off to a Perfect Start With Home Beer Brewing

A fantastic benefit of brewing your own beer at home is that as a hobby the brewer can enjoy it in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons.  You can get into making your own beer to save the budget, and once the essential things you need are bought you certainly will.  Many home brew masters enjoy experimenting with various recipes for the sake of trying and perfecting the craft or a particular brew.  Some will do it just to share a home bottle with their friends and many will get into the science of brewing and study the effects of various ingredients.  Whatever your reasons you’ll find beer making can easily become a delicious hobby, but how do you get off to a good start?

There are only a few things a beginning brewer needs to enhance their experience and have success; a good book or other resource and a kit for getting started.  The information needs to detail the mechanical art to brewing.  It doesn’t have to be overly complicated but in order to try your own variations later on you’ll want to know how the basic process works.  You’ll need to know what is needed in the brewing itself and what equipment you are going to need.  As you are new to the home brewing process you’ll also want an idea of what is possible in terms of recipes.  All of these things should be casually understood before you buy your first home brewers kit so that you have at least a casual understanding of what is involved.

The next thing you’ll want to explore is a collection of what you’ll need, preferably in a kit.  You can gather the basic tools yourself but a starter kit makes things much easier.  There could be nothing more heartbreaking than getting half way through with a batch of home brew only to realize that you are missing something you desperately need and have to pitch the entire contents of your first pot.  A good starter kit will have all of the thing you’ll want to gather; a pot to boil in, a thermometer, sanitizer and often bottles and caps, even bottle brushes.  But in addition to the necessary tools you will also find that your home supplies will come with all of the grains for a decent batch of beer.  All you’ll need to add is the love and a bit of water.

The only other necessary ingredient a budding brew master needs to have great tasting beer right off the bat is the ability to follow detailed instructions.  It is amazing how forgetting a step can alter the taste of a batch of beer.  You’ve got to keep in mind that large breweries have mechanized the process for a reason; to build a reputation for always delivering a great product.  Coaxing the pot up to temperature and cooling it back down at the right time, stirring and mixing and even where you get your water can greatly alter the taste of your batch.  Leaving out steps or letting details slide in the process is not something you want to get into the habit of doing.

Just remember that making beer is not like grandma cooking in the kitchen with a “handful of this and a bit of that”.  In fact, if you have no cooking experience what so ever your batch could turn out better than someone’s who thinks they know all there is to know about the process simply because you have to pay a little more attention to the details.

Crafting your own batch of beer at home is a fantastic hobby, social undertaking and budget saver.  Getting off to a great start doesn’t have to be expensive.  Just commit to making sure you follow the basics and you’ll become a great beer brewer in your own right in no time.
