Avoid Borrowing That Cup Of Sugar From Your Neighbors.
How often does it happen that you actually need to go and borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbors? Not often, but when you do be warned that you may learn more than you care to about your neighbors.
Your next door neighbor is a motorcycle enthusiast. He dresses in black leather and ripped jeans. You are desperate to finish the cookies you started on without a trip to the store so you go over there. You step inside the living room, which is neat and tidy, with rather upscale furniture. You spy a Disney scrapbook on the coffee table and the image you previously held of your neighbor is changed forever.
There is a young party-goer that has not gotten up before noon, ever. You expect to see an advanced home theater system, and semi-trashed couches. Empty beer bottles would not surprise you at all. What you see instead is a classy sofa, well-kept surroundings, and an absence of a television. There is a tall stack of suspense books, very well read, near an arm chair.
Quiet old ladies are fairly predictable, right? Wrong. The one across the street has a very complex electronics set up in her home. She has devised her own alarm system. She is happily engrossed in researching the history of the LED backlight and is dying to tell you all about it over coffee. You are left wondering, what is one, anyway?
The seemingly mild mannered housewife is sure that have some sugar that you can borrow. You are caught completely off guard by the full weightlifting set in her living room. While always polite before, she is suddenly quite annoyed at being interrupted.
A frilly and somewhat snobbish young woman seems straightforward enough. Then you find that she is making fireworks at home. She is preparing to set up quite a display during a local grunge band concert. She rapidly explains how it is just a little preoccupation of hers. The frills never again quite mesh with her in your mind.
Getting to know your neighbors is great. You should by all means be friendly and help each other when and where you can. Be careful though because there is such a thing as too much information. One trip into a person’s home and you may find that their outward appearance is merely a put on for the benefit of others.
