Using a 5 gallon plastic water bottle as beer fermentor?
I currently use 6 gallon buckets to ferment my beer. I’ve been toying with the idea of using a 5+ gallon water bottle like a glass carboy. Several of the brew shops sell these plastic bottles, but I’m not sure what Resin id code should I be looking for. My buckets are a 2 and the bottle I have is a 1.
Anyone out there use the bottles?
I use something very similar made by a company called Better Bottle which is essentially a 5 gallon water jug with recycle code 1 on it (PET plastic) which is the best plastic you can use to not retain flavors from cleaners and previous batches of brew. So to answer your question, yes you can use 5 gallon water bottles. They use a size 10 or 10.5 rubber bung. I would still use the buckets for your primary fermentation just because they are easier to clean.
